The bow is used to draw across the tightened strings, producing a sharp and dramatic sound, which is highly expressive. Gusle belong to instruments that require great skill to play.

Gusle are traditionally used to perform epic songs that narrate historical events, heroes, and legends. Gusle contribute to preserving the memory of heroes and events from the past, thus contributing to the preservation of Balkan cultural heritage.

Gusle consist of a soundbox, head, neck, strings, pegs, bridge, horsehair, and a bow used for playing.
